What is PACS?
Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS) are comprehensive computer systems responsible for the electronic storage and distribution of medical images in healthcare organizations. PACS are highly integrated with digital acquisition modalities, display devices, radiology information systems, and hospital information systems. Healthcare organizations primarily use these systems to store securely and digitally transmit electronic images.
How to Use PACS as a Clinician?
PACS has changed the game for healthcare organizations and providers. It has become the standard system to share imaging reports electronically easily. Proven by more than 200 institutions, the Nuvodia PACS solution delivers the latest technology without the complexity and management of an on-premise solution. PACS can impact clinical work practices in three areas:
- Improving the efficiency of work practices
- Impacting work associated with clinical decision-making
- Improving communication practices
Working with PACS can drastically enhance your workflow if you are a clinical organization. Using Nuvodia PACS solutions, clinicians can easily import a patient’s medical images, allowing fully-integrated data access.
After accessing the information, clinicians can start planning and comparing recent exams to have a holistic view of the case. By getting instant access to these records digitally, clinicians can improve their work practices, have faster decision-making timelines, communicate better with their team, and consequently benefit the patient.
What Are the 4 Components of PACS?
PACS consists of four major components. But, they can also be connected to RIS and HIS healthcare systems via communication services. These are the four main components of Nuvodia PACS solutions.
Image Acquisition Devices
These are all the devices of imaging modalities and gateway computers used in your practice. Imaging modalities include magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography, PET, x-ray angiography, echocardiography, and more.
This is how PACS moves medical data between the system’s components and other systems, including remote locations such as cloud-based systems. PACS networks provide a path to communicate between modalities, computers, servers, displays, HIS/RIS systems, and remote medical locations.
PACS Archive and Server
All the patient’s information and imaging are sent to the PACS server for archiving. The PACS service is the heart and engine of the system. Clinicians access storage media (database) and archive systems to store patient information and data safely.
Integrated Display Workstations
This is the hardware component of PACS. Display workstations allow radiologists to make primary diagnoses. The integrated display workstations have a local storage database, network connection for communications, a resource management component, display, and processing software, including essential image processing functions.
AN EASY, INTEGRATED SOLUTION
Benefits of Combining PACS with RIS
Integrating solutions into a seamless workflow is critical in creating the most efficient workflows. PACS alone cannot deliver the desired results unless fully integrated with a compatible Radiology Information System (RIS). Users can benefit tremendously when the RIS, PACS, and modalities operate as a single system.
PACS has several advantages over conventional films, such as reliability of the system, space savings, efficiency of data management, and teaching benefits. Here are some of the main benefits of combining PACS and RIS:
- Less Waste – Clinicians can benefit from film and chemical costs, reducing film-storage space and eventually reducing waste and costs.
- Superior Service – PACS enables nearly instant access to images and patient data to improve service to patients and referring physicians significantly.
- Increase Productivity – Using PACS increases productivity by at least 15% and over 20% when RIS/PACS is used in radiology.
- Streamline Data – A PACS/RIS network can access all radiology images and patient data in real-time, eliminating redundant data entry and manual reconciliation of broken studies and files.
- Systems Integration – Over 80% of hospitals already have a RIS in place and a hospital information system (HIS). Adding PACS can successfully integrate with other systems for comprehensive solutions.

Great Communication. The Nuvodia Team has been really helpful if PACS happens to go offline or down. They are so responsive and easy to get in touch with when issues ever arise!
Holly Ingram, Radiology Director - Charleston, West Virginia
Choosing Nuvodia was one of the best business decisions we’ve made. They’re fast, responsive and passionate about what they do. Nuvodia actually exceeded our expectations in terms of the level of service they provide. They’re wonderful to work with.
Candace Walsh, Chief Financial Officer - Othello, Washinton
In 2004 we implemented a new Mysis VisionPM solution that required interfaces for orders, scheduling and billing charges. Among the many vendors involved, Nuvodia was unsurpassed, their HL7 integration expertise, flexibility and customer service focus drove the success of our integration effort.
David Holland, Director of Ancillary Services - Seattle, Washington
With Nuvodia, we get the whole package. The technology, the people, the industry knowledge, and the support.
Marc Simmons, Director of Diagnostic Imaging - Moses Lake, Washington
If we wanted to administer PACS internally, and have the ability to provide 24×7 support and the current technical knowledge to manage and maintain not only the software, but also the hardware and network, we would need an IT team of at least four to five people. For a small facility like ours, it is simply not feasible. The PACS support from Nuvodia has been fantastic. On a scale of 1 to 10, I’d give our experience with Nuvodia a 10.
Heather Myers, Director of Radiology Services - Atlanta, Georgia
Many businesses typically don’t have the number of people or breadth of expertise they need for their internal IT staff. Nuvodia is an excellent option. At Cascade Windows, my former employer, Nuvodia was able to provide scalable, affordable services – from hosted IT services to telephone systems – that we would not have been able to achieve in house. Every step along the way, they were very customer-service oriented and responsive, and they always delivered.
Lawrence Berry, Owner - Spokane, Washington
Nuvodia hosts the network for our electronic health records and practice management systems. They provide the best level of technical support and customer service in Spokane, giving our organization access to the expertise and infrastructure we could not afford to bring in house.
Melanie Sims, CEO - Spokane, Washington
Nathan was able to provide me the exact information I needed to relay to the modality vendor very quickly. He also went above and beyond when I did not receive good technical support from that vendor to try to help solve the issue himself. Great customer service!
Celia Hudson, Radiology Director - Manistique, Michigan
Nuvodia is always amazing. What an amazing company and your teamwork is on point! Thank you all very much.
Alexis Frazier, PACS Administrator - San Antonio, Texas
I cannot say thanks enough to the Nuvodia support team for all of the your help you have given. You guys have all been fantastic and very nice to work with. It’s been a complicated mess and your team has been great. Thank you for being patient!
