What’s New with SD-WAN?

Software-defined wide area network (SD-WAN) or SDWAN is a software-defined approach to managing your wide area network (WAN). It is frequently leveraged to load-balance other types of connections, including those from your Internet Service Provider (ISP). SD-WAN has grown into a very popular service – most service providers now offer it. Why? Because with SD-WAN, Information Technology (IT) has shown 3 main benefits: simplified management, improved user experience and increased security.

  1.

    Simplify Management

As a centralized, cloud-delivered WAN architecture, SD-WAN makes it easy to scale across thousands of endpoints, whether they are in the branch, campus, or cloud. It gives IT the ability to automate zero-touch deployments globally, using a single management interface.

  2.

    Improve the User Experience

WAN optimization delivers optimal cloud application performance by utilizing multiple mediums to connect users. For example, in the event of link failure or link degradation, application-aware routing can dynamically route traffic between dedicated circuits. Additionally, it will typically layer on security to drive constant delivery of business-critical applications in a safe, reliable manner.

  3.

    Increase Security

Threat prevention is enforced at the ‘right’ place. Software-defined WAN architectures commonly feature distributed security even at the branch-to-branch level. Data does not have to travel back to the headquarters or data center to ensure advanced security protection.

    SD-WAN New Technology

SD-WAN has become the ‘new cloud’. We are now seeing infrastructure systems talking to other infrastructure systems, co-operating across multiple distinct paths, and making intelligent decisions without us even touching them.

As businesses race to adopt the use of software as a service (SaaS) applications in multiple clouds, IT is realizing that the user application experience is often poor. This is another area where the SD-WAN network model can really come into play – by leveraging advanced connectivity and performance awareness to select optimal paths of inter-communication. Software-defined WAN can also drive down the operational costs of multi-site deployments through better utilization of resources. Network administrators can use bandwidth more efficiently and can help ensure the highest level or performance for critical applications without giving up security or data privacy.

Problems IT Managers Are Trying to Solve

IT managers are constantly working to solve issues around redundancy, cost, and consumption. SD-WAN addresses these issues through advanced, application-aware load-balancing algorithms that deliver seamless traffic engineering, routing, threat protection, circuit-optimization, and simplification of WAN network management.

SD-WAN reduces the complexity and total cost of ownership (TCO), while also improving application performance – on and off the cloud. It prioritizes business critical applications and enables branches to communicate directly and securely to application back-ends. It can reduce circuit costs by better leveraging, balancing, and managing lower-cost connections.
